2020 Home Design: Tech, Eco and Zen Lead the Way

American homes are a study in contradiction. From an increasing focus on smart home technology to a growing interest in zen spaces, home design trends for 2020 are a reflection of our diverse lifestyles.

According to The Plan Collection, creator of online home and design plans, 2020 architectural design trends are all about our busy, tech-oriented lives, along with our eco-consciousness and focus on well-being. Here are their top predictions for 2020 home design features:

Prep Pantries
Not just for storing barware and pouring drinks, these new kitchen spaces are designed to accommodate countertop appliances, sinks, warming ovens and meal-prep areas, allowing the kitchen to remain a place for gathering and entertaining. Prep pantries are also convenient for hiding mess and saving clean-up for later by simply closing a door.

Command Centers
A hub for our technology, command centers act as a home for charging stations, unsightly charging cords, Amazon Dots, Google Minis, package deliveries and keys, and provide easy access to our tablets for looking up a recipe or the kids' school schedule. The command center should be centrally located in the house, such as in the mudroom.

Environmentally Conscious Designs
Eco-homes are designed and built using materials and technology that reduces a home’s carbon footprint and lowers its energy needs. Environmentally conscious homeowners typically look for the following when building a new home:

- Window-to-wall ratio of less than 30 percent
- Maximum wall, roof and foundation insulation
- Tight building envelopes so all openings are sealed
- Energy-efficient ventilation, heating and cooling capabilities
- Water-efficient faucets, toilets, appliances and other fixtures

High Ceilings
High ceilings deliver openness and freedom throughout the home, adding a sense of space and depth.

These versatile rooms can be transformed into different types of space depending on the wants and needs of homeowners. For instance, the space can be used as a playroom to accommodate young children or as a home gym or office.

Open Floor Plans
An open floor plan creates more free space and fewer obstacles. They typically include a family room, kitchen and dining space that blend into a large open hub.

Zen Dens
A designated area in a home devoted to maximum relaxation, zen dens are used as a meditation room or a space to practice yoga and—in an open floor plan—a nearby place to “get away” from too much activity.
